Valentino
Nathalie Wathelet ontwierp een bloemenvaas voor de vorige edities van Mothers & Daughters – A Lesbian* and Trans* Bar* in Brussel (2018, 2019). Tijdens mo(nu)ment reist de vaas naar Valentino gay bar in Oostende, waar ze een centrale plek krijgt op de toog. Wekelijks op maandag (van 24 augustus tot 14 september) wordt de vaas door iemand van Mothers & Daughters gevuld met een nieuw boeket, gemaakt door een Oostendse florist. Het boeket in de vaas is geïnspireerd door een scène of een bepaalde atmosfeer uit films waarin lesbische en trans filmmakers, acteurs of personages centraal staan, met een extra focus op zwarte, inheemse mensen, en mensen van kleur (BIPOC).
Er is momenteel geen toegewijde trans en lesbische bar in Oostende, en hoewel homobars ruimtes kunnen zijn waar lesbiennes en transgender personen vaak komen, zijn ze vaak in de minderheid. Het probleem is nog acuter in kruispunt met een beperking, dikheid, migratieachtergrond en/of benadeelde socio-economische positie. Meet You at Valentino? hoopt het gesprek over het gebrek aan toegewijde queer-, lesbische en trans ruimtes te versterken en het bewustzijn rond intersectionaliteit te vergroten. Mothers & Daughters wil een ruimte creëren voor mensen die geen eigen plek hebben waar ze volledig erkend zijn en eren op die manier de aanwezigheid BIPOC lesbiennes en trans mensen.
Meet You at Valentino? roept vragen op over de omstandigheden en ruimtes waarin monumenten kunnen bestaan en voor wie ze kunnen bestaan. Door dit monument in een homobar te plaatsen, nodigt het project ook uit om na te denken over het functioneren van de openbare ruimte voor LGBTQI+ mensen. Omdat de vaas binnen in Valentino staat, worden niet-LGBTQI+ mensen die het project willen zien, uitgenodigd om na te denken over de vraag of ze de ruimte willen betreden... wetende dat het een homobar is waar een gesprek over de zichtbaarheid van lesbische en trans mensen plaatsvindt.
Mothers & Daughters – A Lesbian* and Trans* Bar* is een collectief dat op dit moment bestaat uit: Alice Versieux, Ben Pigeard-Benazera, Byrthe Lemmens, Claire Gilder, Jessica Gysel, Joëlle Sambi Nzeba, Katja Mater, Marnie Slater, Mia Melvær, Misha Verdonck, Nyira Hens, Paulien Föllings en Robin Brettar.
There is currently no dedicated trans and lesbian bar in Oostende, and although gay bars can be spaces where lesbian and trans people frequent, they are often a minority, and this situation becomes even more acute in the intersections of race, disability, fatness, class and migration status. Meet You at Valentino? hopes to amplify awareness and conversation about the lack of dedicated queer, lesbian and trans spaces in Oostende and beyond, to carve out a space for people who usually don't have places where they can be fully seen, and to honour the presence of lesbian and trans BIPOC.
Meet You at Valentino? raises questions about the conditions and spaces in which monuments can exist and for whom they can exist. By placing this monument in a gay bar, the project also invites people to think about how public spaces function for LGBTQI+ people. As the vase is installed within Valentino, non-LGBTQI+ people who might want to see the project are invited to ask themselves whether they want to enter this space, knowing that it is a gay bar where a process of talking about lesbian and trans visibility is taking place.
